WHAT IS STUDENT ACTIVITIES?

1
AU Student Government
AUSG is the governing entity of the student body. It focuses on areas in both advocacy and programming.
Structure
Student Activities is divided into three governing bodies which are each listed on the right. Each serves a different function on campus.
AU Club Council
AUCC is the governing entity of student clubs. They oversee the funding and training for all clubs.
Location
The Student Activities offices are located on the second floor of the Mary Graydon Center down the hall from the Counseling Center.
AU Student Media
AU Student Media is the governing entity comprised of 10 different media organizations on campus.
THE PURPOSE OF THE REFERENDUM
In order to adequately provide the funding for speakers, entertainment, and club resources, students at American University pay a Student Activity Fee. This fee is necessary to meet the funding needs of campus student organizations. Every other university in the country has a similar fee which provides events and programs to students.

The last time the AU Student Activity Fee was increased was almost five years ago. With rising inflation and an increase in the number of active clubs, the demand for programming on campus can not be met. This is especially true since Student Activities is operating with a similar budget as it had five years ago.
This is the purpose of the referendum.

The current proposal on the fall ballot is to raise the fee from $88.50 per semester to $100 per semester. This $11.50 per semester increase (i.e. the cost of a Cava bowl) will generate roughly $150,000 more dollars for programs, speakers, club funding, and resources for student media organizations.
THE CURRENT REFERENDUM LANGUAGE
The wording that will appear on the ballot this fall will be written out as the following:

“Student leaders representing AU Club Council and AU Student Government have unanimously agreed that an increase of the Student Activity Fee is necessary to increase funding to clubs, to continue to bolster production and distribution of student media, and to maintain and expand programming for students, including through KPU, SUB, and Founder’s Day.
Should the Student Activity Fee, which is currently set at $88.50/semester, be increased to $100/semester, an increase of $11.50/semester?
[ ] Yes
[ ] No
[ ] Abstain”
